John Vernon Hedtke - Links to Fun Stuff

Links to Fun Stuff

Note: May 8, 2000: It never fails: you try to be canonical and then people tell you there's something you've left out. :) I've added a few sites that weren't on the major expansion of this page. And, what the heck? I've created a whole page of nothing but digital postcard site links now, too. Look for Tacky Postcards and City of the Silent - Postcards from the Grave there.

If you're interested in wasting time and having fun while doing it, this is the place to start from. Keep reading; these are in no particular order.

Chivalry Sports This amazing store, run by Gael Stirler, is your first stop for nifty Renaissance clothing, jewelry, weapons, and armor.

The Stick Figure Death Theater "Twice the entertainment. Half the talent." I don't quite know what to say about this except that there are people who have waaaaaay too much time on their hands. OTOH, there's a SFDT animation of the movie "Titanic" that sums it up very nicely.

Bart's Blackboard Sayings One of the funniest parts of the Simpsons is seeing what Bart's writing 100 times on the blackboard. My favorites are still "I will not send lard through the mail" and "The Good Humor man can only be pushed so far."

Bert is Evil ! Evidence that Bert (of Bert & Ernie) is evil. Photos are included.

The Institute of Official Cheer Contains "the Gallery of Regrettable Food" (really bad food that was popular in the 50s), a fascinating analysis of the artwork of Art Frahm and the relationship of celery to loose elastic (read this and see the artwork; it'll all make sense, sorta), the Orphanage of Cast-Off Mascots, and many other dazzling bits of retro silliness.

George Goble's Home Page George is a senior systems engineer in Indiana who won an Ig Nobel prize in 1996 in the field of chemistry for his discovery of how to bring a charcoal barbeque to cooking temperature in 3 seconds. (It involved several gallons of liquid oxygen and the resulting fireball reached 2,400 Centigrade!)

JigZone: Online Jigsaw Puzzle When you're sick of Solitaire, this is a good alternative. There are hundreds of pictures and a couple dozen puzzle formats. If you can't decide, just try the puzzle du jour.

It Crawled from the Bins Peter Gilstrap's amazing tribute to Really Bad Vinyl. Be sure to look at the "Jesus of the Week" pix, too.

I-TAROT Fun tarot readings! "The Three of Traffic Cones: An old, one-legged telephone salesman, tells a joke poorly. No blame!"

Spam Haiku Archive Home Page Just what it says: this is over 12,000 haiku about Spam, that light, flavorful, high-salt, high-cholesterol food from Hormel that we all love so much. Links to other Spam sites (real Spam, not e-mail spam), too.

The Bastard Menu If you've ever been in system operations, you need to read the tales from "The Bastard Operator from Hell."

The Chia Pet Zoo Once again, some people have way too much time on their hands. Worse, some of them also have digital cameras. The funniest part of this is I've had this site on my fun links forever and I discovered recently that I was working with this guy on a contract!

New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Amusements Jokes, stories, and fun stuff for musicians. Some of the links on this page are inactive, but keep looking; there are some gems here.

The Bruno Daily Times Bruno Baldwin's daily comic.

The Cat-Scan Contest! Pictures of cats on scanners. (No, it doesn't hurt 'em, but you should see some of the letters this guy gets!) You can enter pix of your own, too!

How common is your name? An interesting web site paid for with your tax dollars. Find out how common your name is.

The Official Jewish American Princess Home Page "I last broke a nail creating this page on...."

ContestWorld This is a great source of contests. Okay, so you may not win, but do you feel lucky, punk? Well, do yuh?

Craig Charles OnLine The star of "Red Dwarf."

The Death Clock How long will you live? Log on here and find out.

The (sort of) official Daniel Pinkwater Home Page! Daniel Pinkwater is one of the world's greatest authors of children's books. He's very strange. I am one of his millions of devoted fans.

Great Mobile Homes of Mississippi White trash on parade! This site has recently been purchased and upgraded. There are links to the Great Mobile Homes of other states, too. The letters of complaint (presumably by people with more dogs and junker cars than teeth) are funny, too; describing them as "sub-literate" is giving them too much credit.

Find A Grave Find out where someone is buried. You can also check in on death dates for many famous people.

The Nerdity Test This is version 5.x.cubed.minus.3.x.all.divided.by.2. How nerdish are you, anyway? You can find out for sure.

Rocket Car How the "rocket-car-in-the-cliff" story got started. Long, but well worth it.

Brother Theodore's Dark Humor site There's some very dark humor here. Read this and laugh in Death's teeth!

Heartless Bitches International "Deal With It!"

HMT Music Jokes Page More musician jokes, categorized by instrument.

LSD All sorts of stuff about LSD, but my favorite is the pictures of old blotter acid artwork. Talk about "shades of the 60s!" Brings back memories of the Good Old Bad Old Days. Alas for all good things dead and gone.... This site is now hosted by the Vaults of Erowid.

Interface Hall of Shame An essential for them what is designing interfaces.

"'Scuse me while I Kissthisguy.com"The archive of misheard lyrics.

A Visit to Yesterland - The Discontinued Disneyland The world's most famous amusement park meets "Tales from the Dark Side."

Welcome to Charles Fleischer's MonkeyDog! Charles Fleischer (actor and the voice of Roger Rabbit) has a taste for surreal art and writing.

My Boot: movie theater This is a collection of video clips that are amazingly funny. Be sure to watch the sleazy televangelist and the clip of the exploding whale. (If you haven't seen it already, you must. It's one of the things that really made a news day: they tried blowing up a dead beached whale with dynamite. There are falling whale bits all over the place on camera. ) This is best done from work. Not only will you have a higher access speed (some of these are big!) but it's the appropriate kind of activity for work.

Nolo.com Lawyer Joke Emporium The Nolo News has for years offered the best lawyer jokes.

The official "CIA for Kids" page This is even more disturbing than it looks at first glance.

Oh, the Humanity! The Worst Movies on Earth Mystery Science Theater has nothing on a lot of these. They're really bad.

Real Astrology Rob Breszny's "Real Astrology" column. It's a different kind of astrology column and damn, it's good!

Rectaltronics, Inc. For the sophisticated sex-toy purchaser (no, it's not real!).

Rhino Records - Comedy Here's where to go to buy the best in comedy. Check out the Texas Chainsaw Orchestra!

The Dialectizer Years ago, there were a few translation programs that took English and turned it into eye-dialect of various kinds (my favorite was "Valley Girl," like, totally, wow). A number of these (though not Valley Girl, alas!) have appeared here. Give it a web address and it will translate the text and create the same web page only, uh, different. I'm personally fond of "Swedish Chef." Mork mork mork!

Sight of the Day Look at this and be afraid. Be very, very afraid. This is the online guide to offbeat attractions, sent to me by Gwen Barnes, who seems to be able to Really Pick 'Em. Gwen is a person of rare taste and discernment. How else, indeed, would she be able to so clearly identify things that are the antithesis of everything good, decent, and cultured?

Vonda N. McIntyre's SFF-Net Web Page The site for Vonda McIntyre, award-winning author and one of the nicest people in the world.

Get Primitive! My uncle, Dick Baugh, has his own website now. Check it out to find out more about bow scraping, fire drills, and other really basic and fascinating skills.

I, Rearrangement Servant This is kinda cute. It makes anagrams out of almost any phrase. It's not complete -- you'll be able to figure out things on your own that this has missed -- but it's fun and can be very entertaining with the names of friends and relatives.

Zeeks Games A wide selection of Web-based games for kids.
