I have also produced documentation standards, written award-winning manuals for payroll and tax packages, and produced series of installation instructions and release notes for several large product families. Before becoming a writer, I was a programmer/analyst for five years, doing system analysis and design, coding, documentation, and training. I have also designed and taught classes on non-computer subjects, such as instrumental music (banjo and guitar) and making musical instruments. I attended Reed College in Portland and the University of Arizona in Tucson.

I make frequent public appearances and radio interviews, speaking on such topics as writing, publishing, new technology, time management, project management, and freelancing. I was the keynote speaker at the American Society of Indexers conference in 1998 and have been a featured speaker at a number of local, regional, and organizations such as the STC, the Puget Sound Freelancers Association, the Washington Software Association, the International Computer Consultants Association, and numerous amateur radio, science-fiction, and writers' conventions.
